During this flight review we will be traveling to Montgomery airport (MYF). After departing French Valley (F70) we flew direct to Palomar Airport (CRQ). After Palomar Airport, we descended to 1500 feet to be clear of the busy class Bravo airspace of San Diego. This allowed amazing views of the La Jolla coastline.
TIP:be sure to stay clear of the militarys restricted area by Fallbrook airport.
After departing French Valley we climbed to 3500 feet and got flight following for added safety while in route. ATC had us divert a couple of times but that’s why we get Flight Following…..For added safety, even on short flights.
Right off the wing is Palomar airport
Some of the best coast line in the world is found in California……right below us in SD.
Heading down to San Diego at 1500 feet
LaJolla cliffs on the way back from Montgomery MYF airport.
Enroute Temecula looking south to San Diego
Looking east from temecula
Casa Machado off in the distance and right on the airport.
The casa was an upscale Mexican joint with amazing decoration and the option to sit inside or outside. Both options reward you with amazing views of the runway due to the 2nd floor location.
Casa machado is suppose to be an excellent restaurant. However on this day they may not have had their fish tacos dialed in quite right. I found their fish tacos to be undercooked and mushy. Perhaps other items on the menu are far better.
Returning home and looking toward the West with the sun setting.
Time in Flight:
25 leasurely minutes.
TIP: Miramar naval airport is just North of Montgomery. Don’t get them confused.
Montgomery airport MYF is a fairly easy airport to get into. It is a class delta. Communication from the north should usually occur just north of what they call Mount Soledad. As you approach Mount Soledad from the north, ATC will have you stay south. Once south of Mount Soledad, turn East toward the airport as seen below by the red arrow. (ATC and other conditions may change your approach). Do your own flight planning.
Every time I have been down to Montgomery, the active runaways have been 28 left and 28 right.
We never went into the FBO. We were very hungry at this point and ran toward the Casa Machado.
Places Stayed: next time……..
Montgomery is a great airport for a day trip and a scenic one at that. ATC has been very pleasant and friendly every time I have visited. The airport itself is not too complicated even for a relatively new pilot to navigate both in the air and once on the ground.
